10 Ways You Can Donate to Haitian Earthquake Victims

1. Already viral on Facebook and social networking sites, the Red Cross is getting the word out about its text-message donation system. Text "HAITI" to the number 90999 to donate $10, which will be added to your next cellphone bill. You can also donate online through the Red Cross website.

2. Hospitals in Haiti are badly damaged and overwhelmed. To help medical aid workers, donate to Doctors Without Borders on its website.

3. International aid group CARE has already sent 133 staff members to Haiti, and it will be distributing food. You can donate your Delta Air Lines SkyMiles to transport CARE aid workers to Haiti or give money for relief funds through its website.

4. Louise Ivers, clinical director for Haiti for Partners in Health, wrote in an E-mail to colleagues, "Port-au-Prince is devastated, lot of deaths. SOS. SOS ... Please help us." You can donate to support Partners in Health's field hospitals on its website.

5. Today, World Vision heads to Haiti with 18 tons of supplies, including blankets, tarps, andwater containers. Support World Vision by donating through its website.

6. The UNICEF representative in Haiti, Guido Cornale, told the BBC yesterday that the Haitian earthquake is one of the worst he's seen in his life. To help children in Haiti, donate via UNICEF'swebsite.

7. Haitian-American rapper Wyclef Jean's foundation to rebuild Haiti, Yéle, is also accepting text-message donations. Text "Yele" to 501501 to donate $5, which will be added to your next phone bill. You can also donate via the Yéle Foundation's website.

8. International Relief and Development will supply water, sanitation kits, medicines, hygiene kits, and shelter materials. You can donate to IRD on its website.

9. Oxfam already has 200 volunteers stationed in Haiti. They'll be providing clean water, shelter, and sanitation through donations on Oxfam's website.

10. The Salvation Army is sending 285,120 boxed meals of rice, soy, and vitamins to Haiti. Support the Salvation Army through its website.

1.) Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a photographer and a trained dancer, so I spend my days rehearsing, performing, and doing shoots. I am a full-time member of The Can Can Castaways in the Pike Place Market, and we perform in a dinner theatre called The Can Can. It is the hub for Seattle circus artists, burlesque performers, and basically the entire vaudeville community. There I have the pleasure of working with many wonderful actors, dancers, and musical artists which serve as inspiration for my photography. I feel very lucky to work in such a creative and dynamic environment.

2.) Where is home?

I was born and raised in Seattle so I definitely consider the city as my home. However, my mom is originally from Ireland and we used to live there every summer as I was growing up. Also my dad’s family is from southern Italy, so between the two my entire extended family lives in Europe and I feel a very strong connection to that part of the world.

3.) How long have you been a photographer?

I had a very basic digital camera in high school and used to talk my friends into modeling for me, so I guess that’s where I started. Since then my interest in photography grew and I was able to have more creative control as I upgraded to a nicer camera and new equipment. I have always had a huge interest in fashion and I love doing all the styling for my photography.

4.)How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as high fashion merged with some theatrical elements. I try to create images that look “larger than life” either through the styling or the location. I always aim to add something to the concept of the shoot that is unexpected in order to make it interesting and unique.

5.) In general, during a session, how many pictures would you say you take to find "the right one"?

I would say this depends largely on the experience of the model. Lighting always takes experimentation and adjustment, but after that a model who knows how to move their body and the best angles for their face make the whole process much faster and more efficient. I have worked with some very professional people who leave me with more good shots than I know what to do with!

6.) Are you a self taught photographer or did you have a mentor that showed you the ropes?

I am almost entirely self-taught, though I have learned a lot from modeling myself and from friends who do photography.

7.) How do you decide on locations & subjects?

I keep a notebook in my car on the passenger seat so that if I am out and about I can jot down any ideas that spring in my head. I am always on the lookout as I run errands, drive to work, or go out with friends. I usually have a long list of locations and when a shoot is coming up I choose the one that would best suite the model and the whole style and concept of the shoot. I also like to choose locations that offer an interesting contrast when paired with the model. So far most of my locations have been urban settings.

8.) What ambition have you not yet achieved?

There are so many things I want to do! Looking ahead to this year I am planning on working with some local fashion designers and I also want to photograph more male models and experiment with some creative styling for guys. Really looking forward to what this year will bring.

9.) Something you’re still learning?

I am still learning about different lighting techniques and have been experimenting with new equipment. I always learn so much on every shoot, which makes it a really fun and interesting process.

10.) And the last question, if you had one wish…

If I had one wish it would be to have the freedom to travel while creating great art and meeting interesting people. In my opinion, traveling is the best way to keep your creativity at its peak and evolve in your art form.

Monday December 7th, I was fortunate enough to cover not only the kick off VIP party at Tom Douglas' Palace Ballroom, but also modeled the appropriate attire (from one of the stylish boutiques in Seattle, The Finerie) for the up and coming Gala event, The Evening of Hope. This event will be held on February 6th, 2010, at the Fairmont Hotel. This year's honorees are Tom Douglas and Jackie Cross. Over the past twelve years, proceeds from The Evening of Hope event have benefited Northwest Aids, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Puget Sound Affiliate, Plymouth Housing Group, and now Pike Place Market Foundation. The Evening of Hope Gala has raised well over 3.7 million dollars for these deserving local charities.

The winter fairytale Widows & Soldiers tells a story about a woman struggling to survive in a traditional rural Slovenia. She is coping with agony when she is left alone on her farm, while her husband is fighting in war. When he returns she feels overjoyed, passionately consuming every minute of their time together. When he leaves for the 2nd time, she is left with nothing, but sweet memories. Tragedy hits her as she is told he died. Bereft of her marital life, she is unable to cope with her lost and falls apart.
My collection was inspired by the mourning fashion throughout history, from the end of 19.century to nowadays. It tells a story about widow women, who were left waiting for their soldier-husbands to return from wars, were re-cutting, redesigning patterns, recycling their husband’s old clothes and uniforms to create clothes for themselves. This is a story about tragic ways of love and life, about reminiscence, living in memories…
In this collection I used only the finest fabrics, silk taffeta, luxurious laces, wool and other fabrics with special effects (embroidery, prints, etc). I used a technique of silk-screen printing on certain fabrics and hand printed them with flower patterns of old Victorian wall-papers, stripes.

Can you believe we are already into December? The days are secretly creeping by. Last Tuesday was the first day of the month and also the kick off event for Hotel 1000's "Twelve Days of Comfort, Joy, & Cheer." Hotel 1000 started the month off early with a gathering that offered VIP Guests specialty cocktails, festive appetizers from BOKA KITCHEN + BAR, as well as an opportunity to pre-bid on fabulous auction items such as: A Premiere Napa Valley travel experience, Destination packages to luxury hotels, Private dinner experiences with local chefs, Fine Art, and a trip to see Oprah. They also enjoyed a fashion show that was emceed by Lily Jang, co-anchor for Q13 FOX News This Morning, and Shawn Stewart, midday host and music director for 103.7 The Mountain. Not only did people get to mingle, listen to the great dj, sip on cocktails & bid on luxury items, but they were giving back at the same time. The luxury boutique hotel had selected Art with Heart as the recipient of the proceeds. Isn't that what the Holidays are for, giving back?

Blogs were uniting, amalgamating, mixing, bonding, connecting, all of these terms could have been used to describe the frenzy of the converging bloggers during last nights Blog Event held in cozy Seattle, WA.

What a wonderful idea to bring together people with the same interests. Everyone had the desire to express their own unique ideas, and make those ideas come alive in the form of a blog. Not only did the event attract other bloggers, but the event was fortunate enough to welcome non-bloggers, photographers, social media, and last, but not least, the food vendors, such as Qdoba, which supplied a fantastic array of tasty tidbits, along with Mike’s Hard Lemonade, dry soda, and the ever tantalizing, tasty, Trophy cupcakes!

One of the big attractions of the evening that everyone looked forward to was the drawing for wonder gifts donated by Shopruche, Modcloth, SPUN, Hazel Salon, Moo Cards, & Value Village.

Lets thank the two wonderful bloggers, Clothes Horse & Needle+Thread for an amazing evening. We can’t wait until the next event.

Fashion First 6^th Annual Fashion Show—an event at the Heart of Fashion to benefit the Starlight Children’s Foundation

Fashion First was a night of “transformation”—a description used by Oslo’s men’s boutique owner John A. McDowell.

The large space of Quest Field Events Center became an exquisite venue for Seattle’s premier fashion event . Once the lights dimmed and the people began to arrive, Joan Kelly & Wendy Wood’s vision became reality.

The two fashion show producers made sure to give Seattle its fill of glitz and glamour. Cameras flashed, sequined fashions glimmered, $15,000 worth of Alvin Goldeare’s designer jewelry sparkled with grand attention, and wine glasses clinked in celebration of an incredible night.

Beautiful models shone down the runway featuring attire from La Ree, Clutch, Merge, Mercer, Tatters, Ragamoffyn’s, The Finerie, and designs by winners of Seamless in Seattle.

For even more excitement, Fashion First invited Seattle celebrities to model attire from Oslo’s men’s boutique. Politicians, TV reality stars, Radio talk show hosts, weathermen, and sports stars were transformed into models who gave their audience an impressive performance.

Fashion First was an incredible evening featuring Seattle’s finest. Not only was the Quest Field Event’s Center (Seattle,WA) transformed for an evening, but so too will lives be changed by the proceeds that benefit the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Career expert and best selling author Nicole Williams has been on a roll, starting her book tour October 15, this fine women finally made it up to Seattle where we met up with Nicole and many other glossed lips and high heeled women. Oh the fun of getting the chance to get all dolled up and girl chat!

Nicole Williams is quite the women and quite the realist. She is funny but frank, sweet but firm, and gives you the honest truth. Getting an insider look from behind the scenes at Thursday’s “Glitter Gala” event felt like being on fast forward. Getting the opportunity to start from behind the scenes. Robert Lenard Hair Salon invited us to see the preparation that went into preparing over 40 models for the event. For both parties, the models and the salon gave up their time to support a wonderful cause, the Glitter Gala event.

After getting the chance to meet and mingle with the wonderful people at the salon, we continued on to the event. The Sheraton Hotel in downtown Seattle, welcomed us through their golden doors to a glitz and glamour setting. With the lights on dim and many well-dressed folks holding their wine, the atmosphere felt as if you where in an old fashion film!

The theme of the fashion show was, ‘Fashion in Films’. The event planning, from concept to finished product took about a year to produce, and boy was it evident. Each piece was purchased from a goodwill store. It was great to see real people walking the runway, having a great time strutting their look-a-like character from a film. The Seattle art Institute was also a contributor to the event, the students had $75 from a goodwill store to create a garment; the winners were show cased at the end of the show. Surrounded by the runway, countless tables were served 5 star dishes.

Beauty Revolution attended its first tweetup event. Not only was it a tweetup event, but a trickortweetup event where we dressed up and saw lady gaga, a robot, and a peacock, oh my! It was nice meeting the faces behind different social networking groups (blogs, twitter, etc.) while supporting a wonderful cause. Among all the fairy-tale and goblin characters, we saw a ton of people sprouting mustaches thanks to Century Novelty, fighting pediatric cancer one stache at a time, www.mustachesvscancer.org.

Delicious foods were spread out, the music choices just right, the raffle simply divine and the drinks, supplied by two vendors were uniquely different. Elemental Vodka introduced us to their high-quality organic spirits manufactured by sustainable production practices, and Pike Brewery, with assortments of delicious beers, including their signature “pumpkin pie” in a bottle- yum!

Fashion Group International-Seattle hosted a fantastic exclusive event with Luly Yang Couture (www.lulyyang.com) who graciously opened up her gorgeous boutique to tantalize our senses. We had a wonderful array of guests including special speaker of the evening Linda Pruitt of the Cottage Company (www.cottagecompany.com). We have all recently seen her on the cover of the New York Times being praised for her ingenuity and eco-savviness. Linda spoke on why Fashion Group International was an asset to her over the years and how the dear friends in FGI became such a support to her. She feels that within Fashion Group those in the industry will not only get the needed support that is so desperately sought after, but also life-long friendships that continue to give joy.

Attending our event was Project Runway's Logan Neitzel, Gail Cottle (former Nordstorm product group), designer Luly Yang, our own BR's Editor in Chief Susan J. C. Alveshere, BR Publisher Janaea Riddle, and many other noteworthy industry folks!

Now in its second year, they have returned yet again to present their audience with an unforgettable evening. The location will be fantastic, a once Rainer Brewery with dramatic floor to ceiling windows. This event will be a night to remember. BR Magazine will be there to cover the event. Tonight on the Sundance Channel, starts the series of, MAN SHOPS GLOBE. Cameras following Keith to unique treasure spots around the world to find the 'it' items to be displayed and sold at Anthropologie's around the world.

Beauty Revolution has been on a roll!

Having finished up a photo shoot yesterday with Liliane Montevecchi (Latest movie was, How to lose a guy in 10 days, but she is constantly doing shows) and it going marvelous, I cannot wait until the next event. I just have to say being in the same room with this lady makes you think about your own life and what it could be. She was quite the lady. Her hollywood stories, the under the breath singing, and the way she switched characters for every shot was amazing to watch and we felt very fortunate to be apart of her day. Pictures of the shoot will be up and posted soon.

Urban Outfitters, Inc. has its 4th brand. Terrain, is the 4th family member of Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, and now Terrain. Terrain opened just last month. Its only retail location right now is in Concordville, PA. Knowing the company, this store (like the others) will embrace the 'unimagined experience' when walking in the store. It even has a cafe! What an event! Last week I was invited to model for the CRAVE party (sold out) event. My friend, and hopefully one day business partner (cross my fingers lol), Carly Holtzinger, who I must say is quite the woman, is an intern for CRAVE and organized the fashion aspect of the show. The night was charming under the stars of the Tetro Zinzanni tent, the food was delicious, and the people; divine.

A group of diverse and creative vendors displayed their wonderful creations. The time and energy put into these pieces made by their own hands, has so much more value to me then a prefab item.

I had the opportunity to wear a “Labor of Love” by Tuzzie Muzzies. What is a Tuzzie Muzzies? Tuzzie Muzzies are beautifully detailed hats and masks. Being at Tetro Zinzanni for the event (cirque du soleil vibe), it was only right to have these little trinkets on our heads. I had a chance to interview the milliners of Tuzzie Muzzie about where and how they are made. What an education—check them out!

Face- and Body-Cleansing Scrub

This invigorating ubtan (cleansing paste) scrub improves circulation and help tone slack muscles. The Difference....

There isn’t so much of a difference between fashion and interior design. I believe they both incorporate a thought process and a way to express oneself. Each piece or item has to fit like a glove.

Not being the only one moving into my own pad, but my friend and co-worker Greg (BR stylist) is also making the move. I have figured out, it is hard to be picky and cheap at the same time. Well, inexpensive- cheap to me sounds like I am not into quality. Quality out weighs quantity for sure.

Shortly I will be showing my own “abode” and what inspires me. But for now, I want to present how fashion and interior design can go hand and hand. There is a blog called Coco+Kelley and one of the topics is called Rooms from the Runway. Each piece is inspired by one or the other. ENJOY!

Our team is quite the team! We have been through three photo shoots in the last month and a half. And I can say we are still in one piece! Quite the experience and what great models we had onboard. Our shoots were very successful. I would be bragging, but okay we had some AMAZING pieces at every shoot. Who doesn't like to get dressed up in Prada, Givenchy, or Oscar de la Renta? What a plethora of choices we had! What an experience to handle these garments and observe the detail that went into every stitch, it was fantastic. That pretty little price tag sure did reflect the quality of workmanship-but what beautiful pieces of art!!

A week ago, I neglected to introduce myself. My name is Kristina, and I have had the fantastic opportunity of working as an intern. I am moving up the ladder and plan to become a coordinating stylist for Beauty Revolution. I have found myself fortunate enough to be associated with a team that is made up of wonderful, loving, and hard-working, professional people.

My interests are tangled up in many different loves of unique styles. Giving "umph" to every piece of clothing or accesory you own will make you feel special. I focus on wearable items that are comforable for any situation, such as sitting in a coffee shop, slaving away on homework - which I am currently doing, but looking stylish while doing it. :-)

My objective for this post is to reveal light and airy pieces for summer, which hopefully will allow you to take the ideas and make them your own!

Magazine founders Susan Alveshere and Janaéa Riddle are on the Fashion Group International Director Board (Regional), a global, not-for-profit industry alliance started by Edna Woolman Chase, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue and founding members Eleanor Roosevelt, Elizabeth Arden, and Margaret Case among others.

Alveshere also is an internationally acclaimed artist, designer and writer while Riddle formerly served as associate publisher for Today’s Seattle Woman Newspaper.

A talented group of writers including four time Emmy nominated Lori Ann Robinson from Los Angeles and well known fashion forecaster Sarah Davies (formally Fashion Director of Nordstrom). We also feature internationally acclaimed textile expect Patricia Nugent along with well known stylist and author Barbara Camp who brings in the wonderful culture from her years in Europe and the flavor of New York, where she now resides.

Managing Editor Sharon Altaras formerly covered business at award winning Washington CEO Magazine.
